CLERMONT, Fla. – Lake Erie opened its season on Sunday and was swept in a split doubleheader, losing to Post (Conn.) and Southern New Hampshire.

In their morning game (9 a.m.) the Storm were topped, 10-1, by the Post Eagles. The Green & White fell, 17-1, in their 1 p.m. game against the Southern New Hampshire Penmen.

Game One
In Lake Erie's game against Post, LEC batted as the visiting team and fell behind, 5-0, in the bottom of inning No. 1 when the Eagles turned a home run, a triple and three walks into five runs.

Storm starter Katarina Davis would walk seven in her 4-1/3 innings of work. The sophomore left-hander was lifted in the fifth after allowing 10 runs on nine hits. Davis rallied after the rocky start – she held Post to just two runs over the second, third and fourth innings.

LEC plated its first run of the game – and of the 2014 season – when singles by Courtney Hawk and Hannah Shevenell were followed by two Eagle errors. But in the bottom of the fifth, Post exploded for four hits and a walk against Davis and reliever Amanda Anderson. The result was a three-spot in the score book and a 10-1 victory for the Post Eagles.

Post out-hit Lake Erie, 10-4. Shevenell reached base three times (two singles, walk) in a contest that marked her collegiate debut.

Game Two
LEC batted as the home nine in the team's afternoon contest against Southern New Hampshire, a squad that earned the No. 1 spot in a preseason ballot of Northeastern-10 Conference coaches. By the time the Storm came to bat in the first inning, they found themselves down, 8-0.

The Penmen – a 29-15 team a year ago – strung together five walks, three doubles and a pair of LEC errors in crossing the plate those times. Lake Erie answered with one run in the bottom of the first, a manufactured effort after a walk to leadoff batter Hannah Shevenell.

Kate-Lynn Urgo had a hit in that Storm first. Urgo would double later in the game and wind up producing two-thirds of Lake Erie's hits in the game.

Leading 8-1, Southern New Hampshire plated seven in the second to extend its lead. The Penmen were held scoreless in the third and then closed out their scoring with a pair in the fourth.

Lake Erie was retired in order in the bottom of the second. The Green & White left runners in scoring position in of the game's ensuing three frames.

For the game, LEC was outhit, 13-3.

For the Storm the two games kicked off a week of contests in Florida. Lake Erie is slated to play Cedarville and Gannon (Pa.) on Monday.
