Offensive Barrage Lifts Storm to Victory in Home Opener

Box Score

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College women's soccer team snapped its five-game losing streak in a big way, besting Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Malone University 4-1 in the Storm's 2013 home opener.

Elizabeth Awuah (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) led the way for the Storm (2-5, 1-2 GLIAC) with five points on two goals and one assist.

The Storm struck first in the seventh minute when Awuah placed a free kick through a Malone (3-3-1, 1-2 GLIAC) wall into the far corner of the net to give the Storm an 1-0 advantage. Lake Erie's offense continued to pressure the Pioneers. Paige Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) beat a Malone defender to a ball deep in Pioneer territory and crossed it into the middle of the field where Awuah slid into the ball from 10-yards out for her second goal of the game.

Lake Erie continued to pressure the Pioneers defense in the second-half. Abigail O'Hair (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) scored her first goal of the season off the rebound of a Awuah shot. After a Pioneer's goal by Brianna Smith cut the Storm lead to 3-1, Nemec redirected a Marlena Lesniowski (London, Ontario/Catholic Central High) shot to put the Storm back ahead by three.

Sarah Stroope (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) picked up the win in net for the Storm, making three saves. Samantha Wiles (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) made three saves in relief of Stroope.

The Storm return to action Sunday (Sept. 29), hosting GLIAC foe Walsh University.
