Bucur's Goal Lifts Storm to Double OT Win in Season Opener

Box Score

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – Sophomore Cory Bucur (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) put in a rebound in the 109th minute in a driving rain as the Lake Erie College men's soccer team outlasted host Maryville University (Mo.) and the remnants of Hurricane Isaac for a 1-0 win in double overtime Friday (Aug. 31) in the season opener for both teams at the Scott Gallagher Fields.

Bucur collected the rebound after Maryville (0-1) goalkeeper James Hohenstein blocked a shot by sophomore James Grogan (Leeds, England/Averett University) and put it into the net at 108:20 to end the nearly three-hour contest that included a lengthy lightning delay.

Freshman Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) was outstanding in his college debut for the Storm (1-0), making five saves in goal.

Hohenstein faced four shots on net, making three saves and allowing the winning goal to Bucur.  Lake Erie held a 14-12 edge in shots overall and a considerable advantage in corner kicks at 11-2.

The Storm continues its season-opening swing through "The Show Me State" on Sunday, Sept. 2, against the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
