Storm Falls to Slippery Rock in Home Opener

Box Score

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – After opening the season with five road contests, the Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team returned home Tuesday night (April 5), but visiting Slippery Rock University proved to be a rude guest in a 25-9 nonconference victory over the Storm at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

After a goal by sophomore Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) tied the game at 1-1 a little over a minute in, the Rock scored five straight times, including three by Amy Halls to take a 6-1 lead.  Allison Trombetti (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) scored to break the streak, but Slippery Rock scored score more times, including another by Hall, to push the lead to 9-2.

The Storm (2-4) scored three straight, two by freshman Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) and two by Trombetti and looked to make a game of it at 9-5 with 16:05 left in the first half. But the Rock closed the opening period with a 10-1 run to take a 19-6 lead at halftime.

West added another goal in the second half and finished with a team-leading four.  Sophomore Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored a goal and had three assists for the Storm, which had its two-game winning streak stopped.

Hall had a game-high seven goals for the Rock, Cassie Quinn scored four while Katie Roof and Emma VanDenburg each had three goals. The Rock held a 34-18 advantage in shooting and goalie Kat Elkins made five saves in net.

Lake Erie is home again on Saturday, April 9, as part of a four-game home stand. The Storm will host St. Thomas Aquinas College in its East Coast Conference opener at 11 a.m.
