PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- For the first time since being reinstated as a varsity program prior to last year, the Lake Erie College men's tennis team earned a shutout victory on Sunday (April 17) with a 9-0 victory over Edinboro University in the season finale at the Mentor Heisley Racquet Club.
The Storm (2-11) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and took all three doubles matches convincingly.
Freshman Kyle O'Dell (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) dropped his first set to Spencer Zoth 5-7, but rallied for a 6-2 win in set two and then took the match 10-7 in the third.
Sophomores Austin Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) and Jacob Marsinick (Vermilion, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) won easily at second and third singles, respecitvely. Opfer took out Patrick Groover 6-0, 6-1 while Marsinick picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jason Hoffman.
Senior Anthony Nagy (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) defeated Seth Groover 6-2, 6-1 at number four. Classmates Alex Royko (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) and Scott Stuckey (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) closed it out with wins at fifth and sixth singles. Royko won 6-1, 6-3 over Andrew Goughnour while Stuckey held off Andrew Musarra 7-5, 7-5.
O'Dell and Nagy shutout Hoffman and Patrick Groover 8-0 at second doubles in the most lopsided score of the day. Marsinick and Opfer teamed up for an 8-1 win at first doubles while Royko and stuckey won by that same score at number three.
It was the second time this season the Storm defeated Edinboro (3-8). Lake Erie won 7-2 on the road back on Feb. 20.
