PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- The Lake Erie College men's tennis team won five-of-six singles matches and two-of-three doubles contests in a dominating 7-2 win to open its season over host Edinboro University Sunday (Feb. 20) at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.
The Storm (1-0) earned its first victory since the program was reinstated prior to last season. Lake Erie, which did not record a victory in six matches last year, did not field a team from 2002-2010.
Freshman Kyle Odell (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) had an impressive debut in his first intercollegiate match, recording a convicncing 6-1, 6-2 victory at first singles over Spencer Zoth. Sophomore Austin Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) earned a 6-3, 7-5 win at second singles, followed by classmate Jacob Marsinick (Vermilion, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) at third singles (7-5, 6-1).
Senior Anthony Nagy (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Seth Groover at number four singles and classmate Alex Royko (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) won a 7-5, 6-2 decision at number five.
In doubles play, Opfer and Odell teamed up for an 8-5 win over Zoth and Patrick Groover at first doubles while Marsinick and Nagy cruised to an 8-0 decision at third doubles.
The Storm is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 26, with a nonconference road match at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
