Box Score PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (2-10, 1-9) came close in all three sets but was defeated by Saginaw Valley State University (8-6, 7-3 GLIAC), 3-0, at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Cardinals took the match by a count of 25-20, 25-19, 25-18.
In was a two-headed attack at the top for Lake Erie with junior Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and sophomore Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde). Walter killed nine balls with just three errors while Hoppe put home seven with just two errors. Senior Krista O'Connor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had 15 assists.
In the first set, Lake Erie led 8-7 early after a kill by sophomore Andrea Harris (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek). However, it was the Storm's last lead of the set.
Game two was a similar result with Lake Erie ahead as late as 14-13 after a kill from sophomore Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) and trailing by just one at 18-17 until a 7-1 run close the game for SVSU. The Cardinals were able to control game three from the onset.
SVSU was carried on by a huge .302 hitting percentage in the contest while Lake Erie hit a respectable .157.
Lake Erie wraps up its home weekend tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. home match against Grand Valley State University.
