The bounces fell Ashland University's way in a 2-0 win over Lake
Erie College in the GLIAC opener at Slattery Field in Painesville,
Ohio.
The Eagles moved to 2-0 as they look to defend their 2009
conference championship, while the Storm fell to 0-3.
In the first half, Ashland scored the lone goal in the
23rd minute as Tom Rankin put home a ball sent into the
box from midfield by James Livingston.
The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 in the 50th
minute when Louis Clark scored off a free kick tapped by
Livingston just outside the box. The Storm's best chance
came midway through the second half when senior defender Justin
Mihaly (Lowellville, Ohio/Ursuline) hit the crossbar from 30
yards out.
In goal for Lake Erie, sophomore Ricky
Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) made seven
saves.
Ashland won the battle of shots, 18-5, while each team attempted
three corner kicks.
The Storm are in action next on Friday Sept. 10 when they travel
to take on Findlay at 4:30 p.m.
