Box Score It did not take freshman forward Paige
Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) long to adjust to
college play as she put in the go-ahead goal in her
college debut en route to a 2-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit
University in Wheeling, W. Va.
The Storm (1-0) win avenged a 2-0 loss to the Cardinals (0-1)
last season in Painesville.
Sophomore Valerie Urbanik (North Rideville, Ohio/North
Ridgeville) started the scoring in the 19th minute
when she scored unassisted. Wheeling Jesuit answered back
just five minutes later with a goal from Kara Houston but Nemec
found the back of the net at 38:35 with what proved to be the game
winner. Wheeling Jesuit booted four shots in the second half
and Lake Erie countered with three, but neither team was able to
crack the scoreboard.
The Cardinals won the battle of shots, 13-6, and corner kicks,
2-1, but the Storm made the most of their opportunities.
In goal for Lake Erie, junior Chelsea
Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) made
five saves.
The Storm are in action next on Wednesday Sept. 8 when they host
Ashland University in the GLIAC opener at 2:00 p.m.
