PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Junior
captain Nick Lovick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) drove in
seven runs on the day and the Storm pitching staff turned in strong
performances as the Lake Erie College baseball team snapped its
five-game losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of host Urbana
University on Sunday (March 21).
Lovick homered
and drove in five runs to back freshman Adam Beach
(Vermillion, Ohio/Vermillion) in a 10-3 win in game
one. He added two more RBI in the nightcap as the Storm (6-8)
pulled out a late 5-4 victory.
In game one, Lovick ignited a
five-run first inning for the visitors with a three-run shot off
Brandon Hamilton. Sophomore Mike Morgan (Indian Lake,
Oho/Russells Point) followed later with a two-run single.
The Storm added two more runs in the second and another pair in the
third in jumping out to a 9-0 lead.
Beach (2-0), meanwhile, limited
the Urbana bats to just five hits in a stellar complete-game
performance. He ran into a bit of trouble in the third,
loading the bases with no one out, and ultimately allowing all
three runs. However, he was lights out after that,
surrendering just two hits the rest of the way. He walked one
and struck out seven on the day.
In game two, Morgan broke a 4-4
tie in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to score sophomore
Matt Lott (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic) with the
go ahead run. He made it stand up with a perfect ninth inning
on the mound for his second save.
Lovick added two more hits in
the second game, finishing five-for-eight on the day. He now leads
the team with five home runs and 20 RBI. Zach Justice
(Cleveland, Ohio/John Marshall) picked up the win in
relief, improving to 2-0 on the year.
The Storm is at Mansfield
University (Pa.) on Tuesday, March 23, for a doubleheader.
