Box Score ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Lake Erie College football team led
the number one team in the country late n the second quarter, but
the Storm was shutout in the second half as top-ranked Grand Valley
State scored 30 unanswered points en route to a 57-23 victory on
Saturday night (Oct. 16) at Lubbers Stadium.
The Storm (0-7, 0-6 GLIAC) put up 494 yards of offense, but once
again committed too many turnovers – four- to be in position
to pull off the upset. The Lakers (7-0, 6-0 GLIAC) did not
give away the ball in winning for the 28th straight time
at home and remaining in first place in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division.
Sophomore kicker Sam Marcotte (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) kicked
field goals on the Storm's first two drives, but Kyle McMahon
threw three touchdowns to Greg Gay on the Lakers' first three
drives for a 19-6 lead after the first quarter.
But a 12-yard run by junior quarterback Sean Bedevelsky
(Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and a three-and-out by Grand Valley
gave the Storm the ball back with nine minutes to go in the
half. Lake Erie needed just two minutes to go 90 yards, with
Bedevelsky hitting classmate Nick Yeager (Madison,
Ohio/Madison) from 25-yards out to put the Storm in front
20-19.
The Lakers responded with an eight-play, 83-yard drive to retake
the lead on a 33-yard scamper by Justin Sherrod.
Marcotte's third field goal of the half, this one from 33
yards out, cut the deficit to four, 27-23, at halftime.
Lake Erie got the ball to start the second half, but Bedevelsky
was intercepted by Erik Thompson, setting up the Lakers at the Lake
Erie nine. Three plays later McMahon ran it in from three
yards out to make it 34-23. A questionable personal foul
penalty on third down set up the Lakers next touchdown, with
McMahon connecting with Sherrod for a 12-yard score.
The Storm drove deep into Grand Valley twice before turning the
ball over, once on a fumble, then once on a ball that was lodged
free from a Storm receiver near the goal line and plucked out of
the air and returned by Matt Bakker 87 yards to set up another
Grand Valley score.
After Lake Erie again put the ball on the ground on the ensuing
kickoff, the Lakers capped the scoring with a five-yard run by
backup quarterback Heath Parling.
McMahon completed 15-of-31 passes for 265 yards and four
touchdowns, plush added one of the four Laker rushing scores.
Gay finished with eight caches for 137 yards while Sherrod ran for
118 yards on 11 carries and caught five passes for 68 yards out of
the backfield.
Bedevelsky was 22-of-36 passing for 272 yards and a touchdown,
while leading the Storm on the ground with 965 rushing yards on 14
attempts. He was intercepted twice and lost a fumble. His top
target was junior Patrick Luney (Mt. Shasta, Calif./Mt.
Shasta/College of Siskiyous) who caught a career-high seven passes
for 80 yards.
Marcotte set a school record with his three field goal makes in
the game (38, 35, 33). Junior Cameron Bryant (Lorain,
Ohio/Admiral King), starting in place of injured leading tackler
Gus Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had a
career-high 13 tackles to lead the LEC defense. Junior safety
Ryan Studer (Painesville, Ohio/Madison) had eight stops. Zach
Breen and Justin Victor each had 10 tackles for the Lakers.
Lake Erie begins its closing stretch of four straight in-state
opponents next Saturday, Oct. 23, with a noon kickoff at the
University of Findlay.
