Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie women's basketball team
reached several milestones in Saturday's (Jan. 30) 84-53 home win
over Ohio Dominican.
Senior guard Renese Ames
(Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) scored her 1,000th
career point on a layup with 15:46 left in the first half, becoming
just the fifth player in school history with that distinction. She
had eight points in the first 4:14 of the game and finished with 19
points and nine rebounds - one shy of her second career
double-double. It was also the 12th straight time Ames
has notched double-digit points.
It was Lake Erie's eighth straight win, which matches a school
record set in 2007-08. The win was also the Storm's 16th
this season, which also matches a school record set in the same
season.
Lake Erie (16-8) had four different players reach double
figures, led by freshman guard Sarah
Wojciechowski (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo), who tallied a
career-high 21 points in just 20 minutes off the bench.
The Panthers (12-9) entered the game on a six-game winning
streak, but the Storm quickly squashed their plans of extending it
to seven. Lake Erie led 16-2 after Ames' 1000th-point
layup and never looked back, winning every hustle category and
forcing 14 turnovers.
The Storm turned the ball over just five times in the game,
which established a new school record, breaking the previous mark
of eight set twice earlier this season. Lake Erie built a
47-21 lead at halftime, using a strong defensive effort to force
the Panthers into bad shots. Ohio Dominican shot just 33 percent
(17-for-51) in the game, including a 3-for-18 mark from three-point
range.
The Storm eventually built the lead to 37 (72-35) midway through
the second half and finished with the 31-point difference.
Sophomore post Stephanie
Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) put together her fifth
double-double and the ninth of her career with 18 points and 10
rebounds. She had just three rebounds in the first half, but pulled
down six boards in the first four minutes of the second half.
Rogers added four steals and two blocks. She entered the week
ranked ninth in the country in blocks per game (2.7).
The Storm will return to the floor next Saturday (Feb. 6) when
it hosts Central State in the first game of a women's-men's
doubleheader, which starts at 1 p.m. Lake Erie College will be
"Taking Breast Cancer by Storm" as the teams will wear pink
shooting shirts and pink accessories to support breast cancer
awareness. Admission to the games is free, and fans are also
encouraged to wear pink. Fans will also have the opportunity to
donate to the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund.
