Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie College women's soccer team
scored twice in the first half and came away with a 2-2 draw
against Shepherd University Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon at
Slattery Field.
Storm freshman Kaitlyn Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington
North) scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the
eighth minute to pick up a 1-0 lead. Freshman Valerie Urbanik sent
a long ball over the defense to Holland, who deposited it into the
left side of the goal.
The Rams' Brianna Hines scored in the 15th minute,
but freshman Jaimie Nelson (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas) scored her
first collegiate goal in her first appearance out of net for the
Storm in the 18th minute. She was able to head in a
corner kick by senior Lacey Eisenberg (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland)
from six yards out.
In the 65th minute, Hines connected off her own
rebound for the second time in the game to knot the score at 2-2.
The best chance for Lake Erie came in the waning moments of the
second half when Nelson knocked the ball into the back of the net,
but was whistled for offsides with just under three minutes
remaining.
The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods with Storm
managing one shot on net, but neither team could come up with the
winner.
The game was played at a quick pace, with plenty of long balls
played back-and-forth and several counter-attacks. The Storm
out-shot the Rams, 16-15, though Shepherd held the advantage in
corner kicks, 6-1.
Senior keeper Chelsea Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley)
stopped six shots in the match, including four in the second half
and extra time. Lake Erie suits up again Tuesday (Sept. 22)
when it hosts Wheeling Jesuit at 4 p.m. at Slattery Field.
