Spiker's Get Second Straight Win At IUP Tourney

PAINESVILLE, OHIO -  The Lake Erie College volleyball made it two straight to open the season, knocking off West Virginia Wesleyan College in a thrilling five-set match, 3-2, Friday evening (Aug. 29) at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawk/Hampton Inn Invitational.

Earlier in the day the Storm (2-0) defeated C.W. Post 3-0.

After dropping the first set 25-14, Lake Erie rallied to take the next two 25-16 and 25-18.   In the third set, Lake Erie actually  trailed 9-6 before scoring 12 of the next 15 points.

The fourth set went to West Virginia Wesleyan 25-18 and the fifth set was tied at 9-9 before Lake Erie pulled away behind a couple of attack errors by the Bobcats and a couple kills from senior outside hitter Katie Yanesh (Wickliffe, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin).

Yanesh finished with a match-high-tying 14 kills to lead Lake Erie on offense. Sophomore right side hitter Michelle Naab (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) added nine kills while sophomore setters Lauren Bogatay (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Krista O'Connor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) hade 19 and 16 sets, respectively.

Sophomore Brittany Raggets (Eastlake, Ohio/Villa Angela St. Joseph) had 17 digs on defense.

For West Virginia Wesleyan (1-1), Ashley Ziegle tied Yanesh with 14 kills while Hayley Barhorst had a match-high 39 sets.

The Storm returns to the court with two more matches on Saturday (Aug. 29) beginning with St. Augustine's at 10 a.m. in Indiana, Pa.
