PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 25, 2009) - Lake Erie College is two
games shy of tying the program's season win record after two wins
against Urbana University Saturday afternoon, 9-7 and 14-3. The
Storm was victorious in day one of the two-day, four-game series
after recording 18 hits, including six for extra bases.
In game one, the Storm totaled seven hits and committed no
errors, while taking advantage of Urbana's three miscues in the
field. Lake Erie allowed two runs in the top of the first, but then
tied the score in the bottom of the second. The hosts then allowed
three runs in the third, but answered with four runs
on three hits which included a grand slam by freshman Ryan Rua
(Amherst, Ohio/Amherst) in the bottom half of the inning. Urbana
got two more lone runs in the sixth and seventh, but a three-run,
sixth inning for the Storm had already produced too much damage.
Rua went 2-for-4 with two runs and seven RBIs, also hitting a three
run blast in the sixth.
Freshman Glenn Stewart (Strattanville, Pa. (Clarion Limestone)
struck out three in five innings of work without a decision.
Reliever Michael Backes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) got the victory in
two innings of relief in which he struck out one and gave up two
hits and one run. Freshman Cameron Castro (Lorain, Ohio/Southview)
earned his third save of the season in one inning of relief.
In game two, Lake Erie scored in four of its six at bats,
including two, five-run innings. The green and white went up early,
scoring the first four runs of the contest. The team had 11 hits
with freshman Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington)
leading the team with a 2-for-3 effort that included two runs, a
three-run home run and four RBIs. Senior Ben Reed (Middlefield,
Ohio/Cardinal) went 3-for-3 with one run and two RBIs and freshman
Matt Toth (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King) went 3-for-5 with one run and
two RBIs.
On the mound, starter Malcolm Tufts (Concord, Ohio/Riverside)
got his first win of the season after five and two thirds innings
of work. He struck out three.
