Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie women's soccer team won for
the third time in four games on Monday (Oct. 5) with a 2-1 triumph
over the University of Charleston at Slattery Field. The win
improves the Storm (5-5-2) to the .500 mark this late in the season
since the 2006-07 campaign.
The Storm got on the board in the 35th minute as
freshman Jaimie Nelson (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas) found senior
Lacey Eisenberg (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) in the middle of the box.
Eisenberg drove the ball into the back of the net past Golden
Eagles keeper Caitlyn Seader.
The game held at 1-0 into halftime, but just three minutes after
the break, freshman Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North
Ridgeville) deposited a free kick from 24 yards into the top side
of the net to give the Storm a 2-0 lead. It was Urbanik's third
goal of the season.
From there, it was a struggle for the Storm to hang on,
especially after Taryn Conklin's goal in the 72nd minute
cut the lead in half. Lake Erie's back line and sophomore keeper
Chelsea Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) did not break.
The Storm surrendered eight shots in the second half, while
taking only three. The Eagles (1-9) out-shot the Storm, 17-7, in
the game, but the Lake Erie defense, led by Giesen and senior
sweeper Natalia Bartula (Oakville, Ont./Holy Trinity Catholic),
stood its ground when it needed to.
Lake Erie will take a week off before returning to Slattery
Field when it hosts Lock Haven University next Monday (Oct. 12) at
1:30 p.m.
