Storm Stop Skid With 5-Set Win Over Wilmington

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie Storm volleyball team stopped its 12-match streak with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 15-8) win over the Wilmington College Quakers in Saturday's (Oct. 3) tri-match at Athletic Center Arena. Lake Erie (7-15) lost the first match of the tri-match to Davis & Elkins College.  

In Saturday's win, the Storm dropped the first set, but rallied for a three-point win in set two. The Quakers (1-9) took a 2-1 advantage with their third-set victory, but the Storm grabbed a decisive set four win, 25-15, to send the match to a fifth set.  

Lake Erie never trailed in the fifth set, jumping to a 6-2 lead. Four straight points by the Quakers the set at 6-6. The Storm, though, scored the next six and nine of the next 11 to win the match and pick up its first win since Sept. 5. It was the first home win for Lake Erie this season.  

Freshman Nicole Kunar (Northfield Center, Ohio/Nordonia) set the tone for the Storm, notching 11 kills with no errors in 17 attacks. She also contributed four block assists. Sophomore libero Brittany Raggets (Eastlake, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph's) had 23 digs in defense.  

Senior Erica Muniak (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and freshman Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) also had 11 kills apiece in the tri-match finale. Sophomore Krista O'Connor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had 26 assists and sophomore Lauren Bogatay (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) added 24 helpers.  

In the first match, the Storm fell to Davis & Elkins College, 3-0 (20-25, 24-26, 12-25). Muniak, Kunar and Walter each had at least six kills in the match, while Raggets led the team with nine digs.   Davis & Elkins topped Wilmington in the afternoon's middle match, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15).  

The Storm travel to Mercyhurst Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to take on the Lakers.
