Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie Storm and Seton Hill Griffins
missed on several opportunities in two overtime periods on
Wednesday (Oct. 28) afternoon at Slattery Field, finishing in a 1-1
tie.
The spirited match was played at a high level for all 110 minutes,
but neither team could find the net in the final 20 minutes.
Storm forward Scott
Stuckey (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon) scored his 12th goal of the
season, just over three minutes into the first half. He received a
long feed from defender Kyle Roesch
(Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) and placed it into the left side of
the net.
The teams spent much of the rest of the first half in the midfield,
without many chances on net. Storm keeper Ricky
Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante AIighiery Academy) was tested
only once in the first half and made the stop. The Griffins (9-6-4)
out-shot the Storm (6-10-2), 5-3, in the first half.
Seton Hill finally broke through in the 77th minute as Mike
Pistentis beat his defender one-on-one and slipped the ball inside
the back post for the equalizer.
Both teams missed on chances in the overtime periods.
Just over a minute into the first overtime Phil Murphy
(Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) laced a perfect cross for Rob Searles
(Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who sent his
well-struck diving header into the waiting arms of Seton Hill
keeper Jon DeLuca.
Four minutes later, the Griffins were rewarded with a penalty kick
after Carreira tripped up an oncoming attacker on his way to the
goal. The freshman keeper, though, made an outstanding diving save
to his left on the kick to extend the game and save the draw for
the Storm.
Midway through the second overtime, Everton
Blake (Clardenon, Jamaica/Clardenon/Lakeland CC) found Stuckey
streaking down the left side, but the Storm's leading goal-scorer
slid his shot just past the far post.
Neither team could come up with a solid opportunity after that and
had to settle for the draw.
Carreira finished with four saves, while DeLuca came up with three
for the Griffins. Lake Erie out-shot Seton Hill, 13-12, in the
match and 4-3 in the overtime periods. The teams were even (5-5) in
corner kicks.
The Storm will host NCAA Playoff contender Mercyhurst (12-4) on
Friday. The Lakers are ranked third in the Atlantic Region.
