Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie College volleyball team won
its first match, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9), at the
GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament over Maryville University in
Lansing, Mich. on Friday (Oct. 16) afternoon.
The Storm (8-19) battled back twice to tie the match, falling
behind 1-0 and 2-1, before pulling out the win with a 15-9 win in
the fifth set.
Lake Erie never led in the first set and trailed for the entire
second set until it took a 22-21 lead. Again, in its third-set
loss, the Storm never held a lead.
The Storm finally maintained an advantage over the Saints (3-15)
in the fourth set, pulling out the 25-23 win.
In the fifth, Lake Erie scored five straight times to push a 6-5
lead to an 11-5 advantage. Freshman outside hitter Mary Walter
(Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) finished off the match
with three straight kills into the Saints' defense.
Walter was solid hitting the ball with 17 kills in the match and
a .220 hitting percentage. Sophomore Michelle Naab (North Royalton,
Ohio/North Royalton) totaled 11 kills and a .381 hitting
percentage. Sophomore setters Krista O'Connor (North
Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and Lauren Bogatay (Mentor,
Ohio/Mentor) had 23 assists apiece.
Senior Erica Muniak (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and sophomore Brittany Raggets (Eastlake, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) each had 10 digs
to lead the Storm defensively. Sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Laureno (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) led Lake Erie with five block
assists as the Storm had 11 team blocks.
Lake Erie will play two more matches on Saturday in the
Crossover Tournament. The first will be at 10 a.m. against
Bellarmine and the second will be at 5:30 p.m. against Quincy.
