EDINBORO, Pa. (December 6, 2008) - Playing on the road for its
fourth consecutive game, Lake Erie College posted its best
percentages of the season Saturday afternoon, but fell short of
Edinboro University, 85-78, who's listed in the others receiving
votes category in the Dec. 2 NABC Division II Coaches Poll. The
Storm shot season-highs from the field at 52-percent
(28-for-54), three-point territory at 50-percent (5-for-10)
and at the line at 86-percent (18-for-21), however
the undefeated Fighting Scots took advantage of its
second-chance opportunities, scoring 18 points off offensive
rebounds to earn its sixth straight victory.
The hosts ran out to a 6-0 lead to begin the game, then pushed
the score to 12-2 just five minutes in before Lake Erie put
together a run of its own. The Storm outscored the Scots 10-2 in
the next two and a half minutes largely in part from six
points courtesy of senior forward Rick Leasure (Concord,
Ohio/Riverside) who hit two jumpers and made a pair from the
stripe, cutting the Scots' lead to 14-12 at 12:08. During the next
six minutes, Lake Erie went on the opposite end of the scoring run,
this time with the Scots going on a 17-5 scoring burst to go up by
14. The half ended with Lake Erie trailing, 41-27.
In the second half, Lake Erie cut it to five as late in the game
as the six minute-mark after a tip-in by junior center Veljko
Lalovic (Podgorica, Montenegro/Lake Union). Three turnovers by the
Storm in the next three minutes gave the Scots layups and enough
length to earn the 'W'.
Senior forward Derrick Thornton (University Heights,
Ohio/Lutheran East) turned in his best performance so far this
season, going 11-for-17 from the field with three 3-pointers for a
season-high 33 points. He was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line and
had five rebounds. Leasure had 18 points and five rebounds before
exiting the game early with five fouls. Freshman forward Matt
Grendel (Independence, Ohio/Independence) also pulled down five
rebounds.
Lake Erie (1-8) remains on the road for the Hoops for Healing
Tournament at Malone University. The Storm takes on Walsh
University Friday at 6 p.m. in neutral territory with the game
being broadcast live on WELW 1330 AM and welw.com.
