Storm Shocked by Arrows

PAINESVILLE-The Lake Erie College Women's soccer team entered into Wednesday afternoon's non-conference game with Ursuline College on a three game losing streak, but on paper, it appeared that the Storm would be able to snap that losing streak against a team that was in its first year of existence.

Mark October 3rd down as another reason why games are not played on paper. The first year Arrows picked up their first ever soccer victory as they handed Lake Erie a 2-1 loss in Painesville. The win upped the Arrows record to 1-7 on the year, while dropping Lake Erie to 1-12-1 on the season.

Lake Erie took an early 1-0 lead after senior Katie Jayne netted a goal off an Abby Bricker feed at the 24 minute mark of the first half. The Arrows, bounced right back, however, as Jenn Risch drew a foul in the box on Storm goalkeeper Tracy Dolence to earn herself a penalty shot. The freshman forward stepped up and knocked home the kick to tie the game at 1-1 with just under 18 minutes left in the first half. The two teams would stay deadlocked heading into half-time, and it was the Arrows who struck first blood in the second half.

Alexandra Brooks delivered the game-winning goal with about 30 minutes left as she scored an unassisted goal to put the Arrows ahead 2-1. Ursuline buckled down defensively the rest of the game and held Jayne, and the rest of the Storm offense in check as Lake Erie was never able to create a solid scoring opportunity the rest of the way.

Dolence made 15 saves for the Storm in the losing effort while Nicole Krufta made seven stops for the Arrows. Ursuline outshot the Storm 19-13, and 14 of those chances were on net. For the Storm, they had seven of their chances be shot on net, but only one was able to beat Krufta for a goal.

The win for Ursuline could not have come at a better time as their confidence may have been shaken after a 12-1 defeat to Tiffin their last time out. Lake Erie meanwhile, will have to try and get their first home win on Saturday afternoon when they will host D'Youville College of Buffalo. The game is scheduled for 1:00.
