Effective August 1, 2022, all NEW student-athletes (including those who Try-Out) MUST be tested for the Sickle Cell Trait or show proof of a prior test. This does not include returning student-athletes who have signed a waiver during the 2021-2022 year.
NCAA Bylaw Update:
17.1.5.1 Sickle Cell Solubility Test. The examination or evaluation of student-athletes who are beginning their initial season of eligibility and students who are trying out for a team shall include a sickle cell solubility test (SST), unless documented results of a prior test are provided to the institution.
All Lake Erie College student-athletes are required to submit proof of sickle cell testing results at the time of their campus physical. Any student-athlete who is unable to produce results shall be held from ALL activities until results are on file. Testing may have been done at the time of birth, so student-athletes should reach out to their pediatrician or birth hospital for copies of those records. All others are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their primary care physician to get the test scheduled. Student-athletes who are having difficulty getting a test scheduled or who need further assistance can reach out to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine Sabrina McCraith at smccraith@lec.edu
