Pitching Shuts Down Dragons Early But Storm Fall at Home

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie softball team hosted the Tiffin University Dragons today for a mid-week G-MAC doubleheader. The Storm pitching impressed early but they ultimately dropped both games.

GAME 1
TIFFIN - 10
LAKE ERIE - 0

5 innings

Lily Turkowski got the start on the circle for the Storm and immediately went to work. Through her first three innings, she held the Dragons to just one hit and struck out three batters.

The Storm offense threatened to score first in the second inning after Vanessa White just barely missed a home run, hitting the outfield fence and sliding into second for a double. Samantha Lippiatt advanced her to third during the next at bat but she would ultimately be stranded.

In the third, the Storm once again threatened to score when Rachel Fender drew a walk, advanced to second on a ground out by Peyton Powers and was held up at third after a single up the middle by Megan Miller.

In the fourth, the Dragons put together some hits and walks to take a 3-0 lead. They followed that inning up with a seven-run fifth and concluded the first game with a 10-0 win.

GAME 2
TIFFIN - 11
LAKE ERIE - 2

6 innings

Just like game one, the Storm pitching carried the team early. Through the first four innings, starting pitcher Addison Nugent held the Dragons to just one run on four hits while striking out five batters.

The Dragon's first run came in the third inning and they put up five more in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a large lead.

Facing a mercy rule, the Storm put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Faith Thompson led off by drawing a walk and Lillian Campbell drove her home with a crushing double to right center. Summer Bliss came in to pinch hit and she drove in Campbell with a single to right field with zero outs still on the board. Unfortunately, that was all the life the Storm rally had and they fell, 11-2.

Nugent finished the game with a decent line, pitching six total innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs while striking out five.

Looking Ahead
Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow, April 9th at home to host the Walsh University Cavaliers for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
