BARTOW, Flo. -- The Lake Erie softball team traveled down south this past week to compete in THE Spring Games. They competed in six contests and two exhibition games, finishing with a 3-5 record and earning their first win of the season.
Tournament Recap
The bats started to find their groove during the tournament, finishing with a batting average of .299 across all eight games.
Sydney Taylor (.474),
Samantha Lippiatt (.429),
Lily Turkowski (.423),
Peyton Powers (.409), and
Megan Miller (.313) all finished with .300+ batting averages, with Turkowski leading in total bases (13), hits (11), doubles (2).
Storm pitching showed sparks of improvement as well. Through 47.2 innings, they kept the ball in the park, allowing no home runs. In addition to her strong offense performance, Turkowski led the team on the mound. in four appearances and 18.1 innings of work, she had a team-best 4.96 ERA and struck out 12 batters.
Lake Erie earned their first win of the season against the Edinboro Fighting Scots on March 14th. Powers, Turkowski, and
Vanessa White each went 2-for-4 in the game, anchoring the top of the lineup. Lippiatt drove in two runs in the victory and had an inside-the-park home run. Turkowski shined in the circle with seven innings pitched, allowing six hits, four runs, and striking out five batters.
Despite not counting towards their official record or statistics, the Storm finished their last day of competition with two strong victories, riding high as they head into G-MAC play. Across both games, Turkowski went 6-for-8 with six runs scored, Taylor went 5-for-7 with four RBIs and a 1.893 OPS, and Powers anchored the top of the lineup by going 3-for-5 with four runs scored. Sydney Murray pitched seven efficient shutout innings, walking two and striking out two while throwing just 82 pitches.
Looking Ahead
The Storm will kick off G-MAC play this weekend with two road double-headers. They will face Northwood on Saturday, March 21st beginning at 12 p.m. and Hillsdale on Sunday, March 22nd beginning at 1 p.m.
