CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Lake Erie College wrestling team kicked off 2024 with a trip to the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Storm would end with a 10th-place finish on the weekend and turning out an overall solid performance to start the new year.
The Storm wrestling program, who prides themselves in excelling through challenging tasks, had their work cut our for them this weekend by competing in the toughest dual meet of the season. Despite finishing 2-3 as a team, the program faced four ranked teams and beat #18 Northern State in a tough 19-16 win.
Individually,
Christian Small led the way by going 4-0. He would record one major decision win and three by decision including two huge wins against #1 Wyatt Turnquist (Northern State) and #12 John Burger (Nebraska-Kearney).
Corey Gamet picked up a couple of big victories at 141, going 2-1 overall but winning both his maches by technical fall (20-5) and major decision (11-0).
Other wrestlers who finished with a winning record this weekend included,
Anthony Sagaris (125, 3-2),
Carsen Richards (141/149, 2-1) and
Josh Howey (165, 3-2).
The Storm will once again face a tough test next weekend when they travel to Tiffin University for the Regional Duals on January 13th.
