PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Lake Erie wrestling team continued their season this weekend as tehy hosted the Storm Quad Meet at the Jerome T. Osborne Center. The Storm had a huge day, earning ranked wins against #14 Mercyhurst (29-6) and #24 Gannon (20-15) while easily taking care of Fairmont State 41-6 in their third dual matchup.
Corey Gamet (141), Christian Small (149), and James Penfold (174), who all rank nationally, each picked up ranked wins on the day.
In Gamet's first match, he earned a huge last second win against #2-ranked Jake Niffenegger from Mercyhurst. Small went 2-0 on the day, beating #8 James Ryan by major decision and pinning Mercyhurst's Bret Minnick at 2:06. Penfold's ranked win came against Gannon's #8 Cole Casilio. Penfold also went 2-0 on the day, earning both wins by decision.
As a team, the Storm went 22-6 and outscored their opponents 90-27. This marks a huge start to the season for the #6 Storm who begin the 2023-24 campaign with a 3-0 dual record. They will now look look to build upon their resume when they travel to Indianapolis on December 16th-17th for the Midwest Classic.
