Box Score 2 (Painesville, Ohio) – The Lake Erie Storm softball team had a spectacular showing today in their doubleheader versus the Ohio Valley Fighting Scotts. The Storm took game one in six innings with a final score of 9-1, followed by game two with a final score of 3-2. Kiya Smith had a day for the Storm going 3-7 with 2 three-run home runs, a double, and 8 RBIs.
Game One
Grace Hammer took the circle for game one for the Storm. In her appearance, Hammer recorded six strikeouts giving up one three hits.
The Storm had a great game offensively recording nine hits over the six innings. In the third inning, the Storm recorded four hits producing three runs. The inning started with a single by Dani Soria to left field. Soria advanced to second on a single by Jaime Carpenter. Chloe Allen followed reaching on a fielder's choice advancing Carpenter to second, as Soria was out at third. Kiya Smith stepped up to the plate with two runners on hitting a three-run home run to left-center. Leah Buck followed with a single to third, but the inning came to an end as Jesse Carpenter lined out to leftfield.
Another hit for the Storm came in the fourth inning as Soria tripled to center field, she was left on base after two quick outs. Payton Brownlee started the fifth inning getting hit by the pitch giving the Storm their first runner. Allen singled to short after a pitching change by the Fighting Scotts, advancing Brownlee to second. Leah Buck walked giving the Storm bases loaded but the inning ended in three quick outs.
The sixth inning was big for the Storm as well scoring six runs with three hits. Morgan Smith started the inning by drawing a walk. Parker Viele followed by drawing a walk as well, advancing Smith to second. The Fighting Scotts made a pitching change following the two walks. Soria singled to the pitcher advancing Viele to second and Smith to third, loading the bases. Jaime Carpenter reached first on a fielder's choice to short, which got Smith out at home. Brownlee stepped up with the bases loaded again. Brownlee recorded an RBI single to center field scoring both Viele and Soria, advancing Carpenter to second. Allen recorded an RBI as she reached first on an error by Ohio Valley's second baseman, scoring Carpenter. Brownlee advanced to third on the same error by the second baseman. Kiya Smith stepped up to the plate with two runners on. Smith hit her second three-run home run of the game scoring both Allen and Brownlee to end game one.
Game Two
Carly Rowland got the start in the circle for game two. Rowland recorded two strikeouts, giving up only four hits over the first six innings. Grace Hammer came in to finish the game for the Storm recording one inning pitched. Rowland took away a win, as Hammer recorded her first save of the season.
The Storm was scoreless until the third inning. Soria led off in the third by drawing a walk. Jaime Carpenter then stepped up reaching on a fielder's choice to second base, getting Soria out of the play. Brownlee followed with a single to third base, advancing Carpenter to second. Allen drew a walk, loading the bases for Kiya Smith. Smith came in clutch again for the Storm as she recorded a 2 RBI double to center field, nearly over the fence for a third time today. Carpenter and Brownlee scored as Allen advanced to third. Buck followed with a walk, but the Fighting Scotts were able to get out of the inning quickly after.
The third and final run for the Storm came in the fourth inning. Viele started the inning by drawing a walk. Soria grounded out to second, advancing Viele. Jaime Carpenter followed with a single to the pitched, advancing Viele to third. Carpenter stole second on the next pitch. Brownlee followed with an RBI as she grounded out to second base, scoring Viele.
