INDIANA, Penn. – Storm volleyball competed in the Quality Inn Crimson Hawk Invitational, a four-team tournament this weekend at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They had matches against Holy Family (W), Roberts Wesleyan (W), IUP (W), and West Liberty (L).
They opened the tournament with a marathon match against Holy Family in which they dropped the first two sets (26-28 and 22-25), then took the next three sets (25-16, 25-22, and 17-15) for the win. Senior Crystal Kendroske led the Storm offense with 17 kills, followed by Courtney Rosebrook (14) and Maria Blatnik (12) for a team total of 57. Morgan Briggs led the team effort on defense with 35 digs. The Storm finished with 98 total digs, 2 solo blocks and 20 block assists in their first match.
In their second match they faced Roberts Wesleyan, and won 3-1. Again, the Storm dropped their first set (17-25), then dominated the next three (25-15, 25-15, 25-11) for the win in four sets. Courtney Rosebrook led the Storm offense with 15 kills, followed by Kendroske and Nielsen with 11 kills each. The team finished with 45 total kills. Briggs and Kendroske held it down on defense for the Storm, with 21 and 18 digs respectively, a nice contribution to the team total of 80.
The third match of the tournament was against the host team, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Storm swept IUP 25-23, 25-17, and 25-19. Offensively, the Storm had 41 kills, 72 digs, and 1 solo block.
In their final match this weekend, they lost to West Liberty in another marathon match. They lost the first two sets (25-17, 25-22), then tied it up by winning the second two sets (25-19, 25-16) before dropping the match in the final set (15-7). Rosebrook led the Storm on offense with 12 kills, followed by Kendroske and Nielsen with 11 each. Morgan Briggs led the Storm on defense again with 28 digs, followed by Alexis Thomas with 22. The Storm finished the match with 50 kills on offense. On defense the team had 95 digs, and 4 solo blocks.
Head coach Kyle Peck says, "We played really really hard all weekend. We played 4 good teams, and we had to earn every single point. I'm really proud of how hard we fought all weekend; we faced a ton of adversity and overcame most of it. I think these 4 matches really prepared us for the start of the conference season next week".
