PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team hosted the Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks and the Notre Dame College Falcons in a tri-match on Tuesday (Oct. 17).
The Storm defeated the Redhawks 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-13) in the opener before sweeping the Falcons 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) in the nightcap.
The Redhawks opened the first set with a 5-2 run before the Storm took advantage of some Redhawks errors on a 7-0 run. The 7-0 run gave the Storm a 9-5 lead and forced a Roberts Wesleyan timeout. Out of the timeout, Lake Erie pushed the lead to eight at 15-7 with a 6-2 run. After a set error, Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) and Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) combined on five straight points as the Storm led 23-9. Lake Erie went on to win the set 25-14.
Roberts Wesleyan led the second set 3-2 early before Lake Erie responded with five straight points and a 7-3 lead. The Storm led by as many as six until the Redhawks cut the deficit to three at 13-10. Two kills by Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) and a service ace by Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) pushed the lead back to five. Lake Erie kept the distance before ending the second set on a Peiffer kill. The Storm won the set 25-19.
The teams exchanged the first four points of the third set before the Storm pulled away with a 12-3 run. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) had three kills while Shannon Holsinger (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) added two during the run. Lake Erie pushed the lead to 12 as Roberts Wesleyan called a timeout at 19-7. The Storm pushed the advantage to 13 twice before ending the match on a kill by Peiffer.
Peiffer led the Storm with 13 kills on offense while adding ten digs on defense. Fisher finished the match with 12 kills. Kedroske and Lombardo each had nine kills along with eleven digs from Kedroske. Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) led the Storm with 23 assists and Thomas had 20 assists with each setter digging out seven attacks. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led all players with 14 digs in the match.
Notre Dame scored three of the first four points for an early lead over the Storm. Lake Erie got two kills from Fisher and two combined blocks during a four point swing that gave the Storm a 5-4 lead. The teams battle back and forth throughout the first set as Lake Erie only led by as many as two points. Notre Dame took a 16-15 lead on a block. After the Falcon lead, Lake Erie had four straight points, including two combined blocks by Holsinger and Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry). Lake Erie took a 19-16 lead as the Falcons took a timeout. Following the timeout, the Storm pushed the lead to five as they took set one by a final score of 25-22.
Lake Erie took three leads of three points throughout the second set as Notre Dame stayed within reach of the Storm. Notre Dame took a 13-10 deficit and took a 15-13 lead with five straight points. The Falcons led 19-17 before the Storm got three straight points for a 20-19 lead. Lake Erie gained a 2-0 advantage with a 25-23 set two victory.
The Storm started with a 7-3 lead in the third set, forcing Notre Dame to take a timeout early. The Falcons gained a 15-13 lead in the set until the Storm scored five of the next six points, regaining an 18-16 lead. The Falcons tied the game twice but Peiffer had two kills down the stretch as the Storm took the set and the match 25-20.
Fisher finished with 16 kills in the second match of the day. Peiffer had 11 kills and five digs for the Storm. Thomas had assists on 24 points while Zumack assisted on 15 points. Fletcher had a match-high 17 digs for the Storm. The Storm defense had 16 block assists for a team total of nine blocks. Rosebrook had five block assists while Peiffer, Fisher and Holsinger each had three assists.
The Storm will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca Nazarene for Great Midwest matchups this weekend.
