PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team carried over some momentum of a win over the GLIAC South leading Findlay Oilers on Friday as they swept another GLIAC South leader in the first match of a tri-match on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Lake Erie swept Wayne State 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, and 25-18) before the Storm fell to #5 Wheeling Jesuit 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 18-25, 11-25) in the final match of the day.
Wayne State took an early lead in the first set and led until the Storm tied up the set twice at 11-11 and 12-12. Both teams went back and forth until the Storm went on a 6-2 run, forcing a Wayne State timeout. With a 19-16 lead, Lake Erie provided some distance as they took set one 25-20.
The Warriors tried to take an early lead but the Storm didn't allow much distance. Both teams kept the match close until the set was tied 16-16. The Storm took a 5-1 lead for their biggest lead of the set at 21-17. Lake Erie closed out the second set 25-22.
Lake Erie gained an early advantage with a 4-1 lead and went wire-to-wire to finish the sweep of the Warriors for Lake Erie's first win in program history over Wayne State.
Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) led the Storm with 14 kills while Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) added nine kills in the match. On defense, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led the charge with 13 digs. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) had 11 digs on defense. Lee Lee Barrett (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Ooltewah) came up big on defense as she finished with three solo blocks and two block assists.
In the second match of the day, the Storm came out in force against the Division II National Champions, Wheeling Jesuit. The Storm fell behind until the Storm tied the game 9-9. Lake Erie took a 10-5 run, forcing a Cardinals timeout. The Storm went on to win set one 25-19.
Wheeling Jesuit powered through the next three sets en route to a 3-1 win over the Storm.
Fisher led the Storm in match two with 12 kills while Barrett had 11 in the match. Fletcher led the Storm defense with 19 digs, Peiffer had 12 digs and nine kills. Kedroske and Jamie Riley (Prospect, Ohio / Olentangy) each had ten digs. Gabrielle Woods (Elyria, Ohio / Brookside) had a season-high eight kills and a team-leading .462 hitting percentage.
The Storm will return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 1) for Senior Day against Ohio Dominican University.
