UNIVERSITY PARK, Mich. - The Lake Erie College women's soccer team opened a two game weekend in Michigan with a 2-0 loss to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Friday (Sept. 30) afternoon.
Lake Erie's two game winning streak was snapped as the Storm fell to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
In the 23rd minute, Saginaw Valley took the lead off the foot of the GLIAC's second leading scorer. Ashley Henderson scored on a penalty kick after a penalty in the box. With three ticks left in the first half, Saginaw Valley got an insurance goal from Valentina Giambanco, a shot that deflected off of a Storm defender. At the half, the Cardinals led 2-0.
Saginaw Valley provided pressure throughout the entire first half as they put up 21 shots to Lake Erie's two. Marissa Brannon (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) made eight saves in the first half.
Lake Erie's defense amped up the defensive pressure as they held the Cardinals to only six second half shots. Overall, Saginaw Valley outshot the Storm 27-6.
Elizabeth Auwah (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) led the Storm with three shots. Brannon totaled 12 saves and two goals allowed.
The Storm will play at Northwood on Sunday (Oct. 2) for a GLIAC matchup.
