PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Senior Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) found the back of the net in the 101st minute to break a scoreless tie and get the Lake Erie College women's soccer team into the win column for the first time this season with a 1-0 (2OT) victory over visiting Notre Dame College (Ohio) Monday night (Sept. 10) at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
The Storm (1-3) took the opening kick of the second overtime and marched down the field. After a brief scrum, Urbanikcame away with the ball 10 yards from the goal and put it past the right of keeper Christy Kolschetzky for the game-winner.
The goal was the first of the season of Urbanik and earned the Storm a win in their home opener and snapped a three-game series losing streak to Notre Dame (1-3).
Classmate Megan Baldacci (Cavecreek, Az./Cactus Shadows) was stellar in goal, making four saves, including a pair off free kicks in the closing minutes of the first overtime.
Kolschetzky made six saves for the Falcons.
The two teams were playing for the first time since 2002. Notre Dame now leads the series 7-3-1. They will meet again on Sept. 29 in Lyndhurst, Ohio.
The Storm continues its homestand this weekend when it opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Friday, Sept. 14, against Michigan Technological University at noon.
