Lake Erie Hangs Tough With Defending National Champion In Defeat
PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (1-7, 0-5 GLIAC) played as though it belonged with the defending national champion Grand Valley State University (5-0-2, 4-0 GLIAC) but was outmanned in a 4-0 loss at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville, Ohio.
In goal for the Storm, sophomore Megan Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) made 10 saves.
The final margin and overall level of play was a strong improvement compared to the Storm's 7-0 loss to the Lakers last season.
In the first half, Lake Erie stood toe-to-toe with GVSU, but struggled to get possession deep into Grand Valley's zone. The Lakers finally got on the board in the 21st minute when Kayla Addison scored off a feed from Ashley Botts. At 31:33 in was Botts getting on the board as she score from 30 yards out off a tapped in free kick by Alyssa Mira. The Storm trailed 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Grand Valley extended its lead when Maria Brown scored from five yards out. In the final three minutes, the Lakers tacked on one more goal with Jessica Trout finding the net from five yards out.
Grand Valley won the battle of shots, 22-2, and corner kicks, 2-0.
The Storm continues GLIAC play Sunday when they take on Ferris State University.
