On a blistery day in Painesville, Ashland University (2-0) fought through the Storm and secured a 3-0 victory over Lake Erie College (1-1) at Slattery Field.
In the first half, the Eagles used the wind to their advantage as they barraged shots towards Lake Erie junior goalkeeper Chelsea Giesen. Giesen handled the first 14 shots of the half, with eight saves, but the 15th and final attempt by Alicia VanZanten found the back of the net in the 41st minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Ashland continued to push the pace in the second half and after several close chances, put its second goal on the board in the 67th minute when Jamie Greene scored from 15 yards out on the right side after a ball from Ashley Dragos. Eight minutes later, the Eagles pushed their advantage to 3-0 as Tani Lopez headed in a great cross from Maria Lackey.
The Eagles won the battle of shots, 26-6, while each team attempted five corner kicks.
Giesen finished the contest with 10 saves.
The Storm are in action next on Friday Sept. 10 when they travel to take on Findlay at 2:00 p.m.
