PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Freshman Kaitlyn Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) unleashed a hat trick and freshman Taylor Yurick (Olmstead Falls, Ohio/Olmstead Falls) totaled two assists as the Lake Erie women's soccer team routed Ohio Valley University, 5-0, on Saturday (Sept. 26).
Holland netted her first goal just 66 seconds into the game to set the tone on a chilly and dreary afternoon at Slattery Field. The goal came from Yurick's assist.
The freshman struck again in the 31st minute, picking up a breakaway off a tipped pass from senior Emma Hoskins (Fairfield, Ohio/McAuley). Holland finished from 12 yards out to beat OVU keeper Abbi Menear, who was charging on the breakaway.
The Storm extended its lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute as freshman Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) found a seam in the backline and finished from 12 yards.
Sophomore Chelsea Giesen (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley), who faced no shots as the goalkeeper in the first half, moved to striker in the second half and scored her second goal of the season in the 71st minute off Yurick's second assist.
Holland polished off the scoring and her first career hat trick with a goal off a rebound in the 76th minute. The rookie now has a team-leading six goals on the season. Freshman keeper Jaimie Nelson (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas) faced only one shot in the second half, picking up the Storm's only save of the afternoon.
Lake Erie (3-4-2) out-shot the Fighting Scots (1-9), 23-1, and won the advantage in corner kicks, 16-1.
The game ended a six-game homestand for the Storm and the team will hit the road on Wednesday (Sept. 30) for a game at Waynesburg at 6:30 p.m.
