INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Lake Erie College wrestling team had two regional champions crowned among five wrestlers that punched their tickets to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Five national championship qualifiers ties a program-best mark.
The Storm finished 4th of 14 teams with 88.5 team points.
125-pounder Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield), ranked 11th nationally, opened the semifinal match with a pinfall win over eighth-ranked Trung Duong (Newberry) in the second round. In the finals, Glogouski became the third regional champion in school history as he defeated fourth-ranked Ronzell Darling (Wisconsin-Parkside) by a 6-4 decision.
Seventh-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) opened the day with a semifinal win over Ashland's Bret Romanzak by a 6-2 decision. Vandermeer became the second regional champion this year with a 10-8 decision victory over Kade Kitchens of Shorter University. Vandermeer made a comeback from being down 8-3 to earn his third national championship appearance.
Second-ranked Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) defeated third-ranked Brent Fickel of Ashland with an 11-6 decision in the semifinals. Boggs fell in the 149 pound title match to top-ranked Nic Goebel (Findlay) by a 5-1 decision. Boggs' runner-up finish earned him a spot at Nationals.
11th-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) battled back from a semifinal loss to finish third and clinch a spot at Nationals. Hughes fell to Mikey Thomas of UNC Pembroke by a 12-3 major decision. Hughes went up against Tiffin's Jared Chambers in the consolation bracket. Hughes won by a 1-0 decision. In the third place match, Hughes defeated Taylor DeLong of Indianapolis by a 13-7 decision.
197-pounder Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) also made a comeback following a semifinal loss to earn a third place finish. Rosborough fell to fourth-ranked Matt Rudy from Limestone by a 4-3 decision. In the next match, Rosborough defeated Cody Brundage of Newberry with a 5-3 decision. In the third place match, Rosborough moved on to Nationals with a 2-0 decision victory over tenth-ranked Kevin Christman from Tiffin.
157-pounder Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) fell to tenth-ranked Heath Lange (Indianapolis) by fall in the semifinals. Baughman faced Sam Viengmany from Tiffin in the next match and was defeated by a 12-4 major decision. In the fifth place match, Baughman fell to UNC Pembroke's Eric Milks by fall. Baughman went 2-3 at regionals for a sixth place finish.
Heavyweight Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) fell to Newberry's Patton Gossett by an 8-5 decision in the third consolation round.
The Storm will compete in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on March 10th-11th.
