#14 Storm Fall on Final Match vs. #6 Notre Dame, 25-19

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The #14 ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team took on #6 Notre Dame College on Friday (Jan. 20) night in a back-and-forth, intense battle at the Osborne Center. For the third straight dual, the match came down to the final matchup.

The Falcons won the final matchup, taking the dual 25-19.

At 125-pounds, Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) rallied after two Notre Dame takedowns by seventh-ranked Ivan McClay in the first period. Glogouski made a takedown in the second period before pinning McClay to win the match.

At 133-pounds, Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) fought off an early takedown against David Bavery of the Falcons with a reversal, tying the match at two in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Lieb sealed the victory with a two-point near fall on the way to a 4-2 decision win.

In the 141-pound matchup, Notre Dame's Cobey Fehr won via fall in the first period against the Storm's Zach Ruggles (Marietta, NY / Marcellus). The Falcons cut the Storm's lead to 9-6.

Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside), the fourth ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, went up against Taylor Misuna for Notre Dame. Boggs took control in the early going with two takedowns and a reversal as he led 6-4 in the first period. After a reversal at the start of the period, Boggs added an escape point and another takedown for a 9-6 lead. Boggs pulled away in the match as he added two more takedowns, an escape point and a point for riding time in the third. He won by a 15-7 major decision, pushing the Storm's lead to 12-6.

At 157 pounds, Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) fell behind in the first period as tenth-ranked Ju Ju Edmond led 6-4 with two takedowns. Edmond added a second period takedown and a riding time point for a 9-3 decision.

In a battle of two top ten ranked wrestlers at 165 pounds, Isaiah White from Notre Dame took on Lake Erie's Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. /Clarkston). White controlled the match with takedowns in each period and six total. White won by a 13-3 major decision. After the match, the official deducted a point from Notre Dame's team total for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Lake Erie led 13-12 after six matches.

At 174 pounds, Brendon Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) took on tenth-ranked Justan Rivera for the Falcons. Winning stayed with Rivera as he reversed an early Falcon takedown. Rivera added three takedowns in the last period for a 12-4 major decision. Notre Dame took their first lead of the night at 16-13.

Tenth-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) took on the number one wrestler at 184 pounds, Garrett Lineberger. Hughes had an early 1-0 lead in the first before Lineberger had two takedowns and two near-falls in the last two periods. Lineberger defeated Hughes with a 14-1 major decision.

197-pounder Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) got off to a fast start against Trent Allen. Rosborough had a takedown and a four-point near fall before pinning Allen. The fall closed the gap to 20-19 Notre Dame with one match to go.

At heavyweight, Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio / Sheridan) answered the takedowns from Kameron Teacher throughout the match but he could not get any offense going. Teacher clinched the match for Notre Dame with a 20-5 technical fall. The final score was 25-19 Notre Dame.

The Storm will host #12 Ashland and #18 Kutztown next Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Osborne Center.
