FINDLAY, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team competed at the University of Findlay Open on Saturday (Nov. 19) and had a good showing as a team.
Three wrestlers placed in the top three and four more placed in the top six against talent from Divisions I, II and III.
184-pounder Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) found himself at the top of the podium for the second straight week as he won the 184 pound weight class. In the first round, Hughes defeated Nate Hall of Ohio University by decision before winning his second round match by an 18-0 technical fall. He pinned Colton Carroll from Cleveland State at the 2:55 mark in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinal, Hughes defeated Kevin Khoma from John Carroll by a 12-1 major decision. Hughes won the final match by medical forfeit, completing a 5-0 day.
165-pounder Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich / Clarkston) opened his day with a 18-0 technical fall over Ancilla College's Charles Lanam in the prelims. Vandermeer defeated his first round opponent, Gannon's Michael Bielski by fall at the 5:16 mark. He won his second round match against Anthony Smith (Wheeling Jesuit) by a 12-8 decision. In the quarterfinals, Vandermeer defeated Ashland's Bret Romanzak by a 4-2 decision. He advanced to the finals with a 6-0 decision over Ohio's Ben Schneider. Vandermeer fell to Mercyhurst's Francis Mizia by a 10-0 major decision to finish second.
149-pounder Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) placed third after dominating the first part of the day. Boggs pinned Ryan Ford from Cleveland State 4:15 into the preliminary round. Josh Cornell from West Liberty was defeated by a 22-6 technical fall in the first round. He defeated John Carroll's Jarrad Lasko by a 13-5 major decision, moving on to the quarterfinals. He beat Dominick Nania of Wheeling Jesuit with a 8-6 decision in the quarterfinal. Boggs suffered his first defeat in the semifinal as he fell to Tiffin's Trey Grine by a 13-4 major decision. He placed third after winning by medical forfeit in the third place match.
133-pounder Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) won his first three matches of the day before he dropped his semifinal and third place match. His 3-2 record earned him a fourth place finish.
141-pounder Josh Davis (Haubstadt, Ind. / F.S. Reitz) finished sixth after fighting his way through the consolation bracket. After winning his first round match, he dropped his second round match. Davis won four straight matches in the consolation bracket before being defeated in the fifth place match.
157-pounder Connor Nemec (Mantua, Ohio / Crestwood) dropped his first match of the day in the first round. Nemec notched six straight wins to win fifth place in the consolation bracket.
Heavyweight Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio / Sheridan)won four straight matches in the consolation bracket after he dropped his second round matchup by fall. His 5-2 record on the day earned him a 6th place finish.
Brendon Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) (184 pounds) and Brendan Scherer (Fresno, Ohio / River View) (184 pounds) each won two matches in their weight classes.
