INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The sixth-ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team netted several top finishing at day two of the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis Sunday (Dec. 20).
As a team, the Storm finished in fifth place with 91 total points.
Eighth-ranked 157-pounder Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) had the top finish for the Storm, finishing in third. Baughman fell in the semifinals to McKendree University's Kevin Cooper by decision. In the consolation semifinals, Baughman rebounded with a win over Kyle Terry of Campbellsville College by decision, 8-3. In the third-place match, Baughman bested Joey White of the University of Findlay 4-2.
165-pounder Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) finished in fourth. Vandermeer fell in his semifinal match against Travis Bradford of Western State University. In the consolation semifinals, Vandermeer bounced back with a 1-0 decision over Nicholas Skonieczny of the University of Findlay. Vandermeer fell in the third-place match to Nick Fishback of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to finish in fourth.
174-pounder Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also finished in fourth. After falling in his semifinal match against Nick Becker of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Vandermeer defeated Austin Harris of Western State University in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match, Vandermeer fell to Blaze Shade of the University of North Carolina Pembroke by decision to settle for fourth.
Heavyweight Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio/Sheridan) started the day in the consolation bracket. In his first match, he pinned Matt Halverson of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening round. The heavyweight continued to roll in the consolation semifinals, picking up his second first round pin of the day, this time against Mike Kennedy of Newberry College. Loughman advanced to the third-place match he fell to Damon Sims of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown to finish in fourth.
141-pounder Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) also started the day in the consolation bracket. Ross was victorious in his first match of the day, defeating Pernevellon Shepard of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside by decision, 4-2. However, Ross was unsuccessful in his next two matches as he finished in sixth.
197-pounder Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) opened up day two with a decision loss against BJ Carman of St. Catharine College, putting him in the seventh-place match. In his final match of the event, Rosborough secured seventh-place with a 15-2 major decision against Cody Brundage of Newberry College.
