Pin Lifts Black Team Over Green in Intrasquad Scrimmage

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College wrestling team kicked off their 2015-16 with the Black vs. Green Intrasquad Scrimmage Sunday (Nov. 1).

The black team team won 20-14.

The 125-pound bout featured Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) for the black and Andrew Castaneda (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) for the green.  Glogouski picked up the first points with a takedown early in the first, riding out the remainder of the period.  He increased his lead to three with an escape in the second.  Glogouski grew his lead to five with another takedown.  In the third, Glogouski picked up his third takedown.  With a point of riding time, Glogouski won by major decision, 8-0. 

The 133-pound bout featured Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins) for the black and Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) for the green.  After Gillihan secured the first takedown, Leeb reversed positions to tie the match at two early in the first.  Gillihan took Lieb down for the second time.  He picked up six more points on near falls to take an 11-2 lead into the second.  The lead increased to 14-2 entering the third.  Lieb scored his first takedown but it was not enough as Gillihan won by major decision, 16-4. 

The 141-pound bout featured Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) for the black and Alec Benedetti (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) for the green.  Ross scored the first points with a takedown late in the opening period.  He added another two points with a reversal in the second, riding out the rest of the time.  In the third, Ross scored his second takedown and rode it out for a 9-0 major decision. 

The 149-pound bout featured Conner Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) the black and Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) for the green.  After a scoreless first period, Nemec scored the first points with an escape.  In the third, Boggs matched Nemec's escape to tie it up once again.  The match went into overtime, Boggs scored the first takedown of the match to win 3-1. 

The 157-pound bout featured Sonny Lucas (Brecksville Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) for the black and Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) for the green.  Baughman scored an early takedown to gain a 2-0 advantage.  He picked up two more takedowns with Lucas escaping both, as he took a 6-3 lead into the second.  The lead increased to 9-3 with an escape and his fourth takedown early in the second.  After Lucas escaped once again however, Baughman secured takedown number five for an 11-4 lead at the end of two. In the final frame, Baughman scored three more takedowns for a 16-7 major decision. 

The 165-pound bout featured Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) for the black and Joshua Lorence (Aurora, Ohio/Crestwood) for the green. Vandermeer picked up a quick takedown in the first and picked up a good amount of riding time before Lorence escaped. In the second, Vandermeer picked up a four point near fall to take a 6-2 lead into the third. Vander landed his second takedown in the third for the 9-3 decision.  

The 174-pound bout featured Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield) for the black and Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Ohio/Clarkston) for the green.  After a scoreless first period, Vandermeer landed a takedown for the first points of the match.  Palser scored two points off an escape and stalling but Vandermeer took him down as time expired in the period.  Vandermeer's escape to start the third gave him a three point advantage.  He maintained the lead for a 5-2 decision. 

The 184-pound bout featured Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) for the black and Brendan Scherer (Fresno, Ohio/River View) for the green.  Hughes scored the first points with a takedown, matched by an escape by Scherer.  Scherer picked up two points on an escape and a stalling call, but Hughes picked up a takedown to regain the lead.  An escape by Scherer tied up the bout heading into the third.  Hughes regained the lead with a reversal to start the third but Scherer cut the lead to one with an escape.  Scherer tied it with a stalling point to send the match to overtime.  Hughes picked up a quick takedown in the extra session for the 8-6 decision. 

The scrimmage came down to the heavyweight bout featuring Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio/Sheridan) for the black and Noah Hosking (Milford, Mich./Milford) for the green.  Hosking opened with a quick takedown but Loughman reversed it and picked up a near fall to move ahead 6-3.  Hosking picked up his second takedown, met by an escape, to close the gap to two.  However, Loughman landed a takedown and moved into a pin to secure the win for the black team. 

The Storm's first tournament of the season is next weekend at Eastern Michigan University.
