EDMOND, Okla.—After their win over second-ranked Notre Dame College Sunday (Jan. 25), the Lake Erie College wrestling team returned to the top-10 of the NCAA Division-II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll.
The Storm cracked the top-10 at number eight after being 15th in the last poll. In December, the Storm peaked at seven in the rankings. They are currently ranked first in their region.
Last Sunday, the Storm defeated cross-town rival Notre Dame 18-16. The match came down to the heavyweight contest in which Noah Hosking (MIldford, Mich./Milford) emerged victorious via decision. Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) also earned decision victories. Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) picked up a pinfall at 133-pounds against the Falcons. For his effort, he was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Wrestler of the Week.
Earlier in the week, the Storm defeated Tiffin University, 31-6, in GLIAC action. Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville), Matt Vandermeer, Vargo and Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) had decision victories. Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) won by major decision while Ross picked up a tech fall. Rosborough won by pinfall and currently leads all Division-II wrestlers with 11 pins.
Vargo cracked the top-eight of the 149-pound rankings, making his debut at number eight. Vargo picked up a 3-0 decision against Andrew Bannister of Notre Dame, who was ranked sixth in the country at the time.
The Storm is back in action this weekend at the Super Region-II Duals hosted by Tiffin.
