PAINESVILLE, Ohio—It all came down to the heavyweight contest between the 15th-ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team and the second-ranked, defending NCAA Division-II National Champion Notre Dame College where Noah Hosking picked up the 3-0 decision for the Storm to give them the 18-16 victory Sunday (Jan. 25) in Painesville.
The Storm victory marks their first dual win against their cross-town rivals and arguably the biggest dual victory in the program's history.
Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) faced Jacob Goodwin at 125-pouinds to start the dual. Glogouski secured the first takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Glogouski increased his lead to 3-0 with an escape in the second period. Goodwin cut the lead to one with a takedown to start the third. Glogouski escaped but Goodwin scored his second takedown to tie the match. Glogouski regained the lead with an escape. However, Goodwin landed a takedown and a nearfall in the final 10 seconds to pick up the decision win, 8-5.
Ivan McClay scored the first points against Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) at 133-pounds with a takedown but Ross escaped to cut the lead to one heading into the second. Ross escaped to start the second, tying the bout. Ross landed a two-legged takedown late in the period to gain a 4-2 edge. McClay escaped to start the third but Ross scored his second takedown to gain a three point edge. Ross landed a third takedown which led to a pin fall, giving the Storm a 6-3 lead in the dual.
Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) trailed third-ranked Maurice Miller 2-0 after the first period of their 141-pound bout. Boggs cut the lead to one with an escape in the second period. However, Miller scored two takedowns in the third to seal the win and tie the dual.
After a scoreless first period in the 149-pound bout, Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) scored a reversal to take a 2-0 lead against sixth-ranked Andrew Bannister in the second period. Neither wrestler scored in the third, but Vargo picked up a point of riding time for the 3-0 decision.
Top-ranked Jonatan Rivera scored the first takedown of the 157-pound bout against Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth). Baughman escaped to cut the lead to one heading into the second. Rivera increased his lead to two with an escape in the second. Baughman escaped to start the third but was unable to overcome the deficit as Rivera picked up the 3-2 decision to tie the dual once again.
Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) picked up the first points of the 165-pound bout against Garret Linberger with an escape to start the second period. He kept that lead heading into the third, where he wrapped up the win for the 1-0 decision, putting the Storm back in front, 12-9.
Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) faced top-ranked Joey Davis at 174-pounds. Davis landed the first takedown midway through the opening period but Vandermeer escaped to cut the lead to one. Vandermeer escaped to tie the bout early in the second. Davis scored an escape and a takedown in the third to gain a 5-3 advantage. He picked up a point of riding time for the 6-3 decision, tying the dual at 12.
Top-ranked Garrett Lineberger gained a 1-0 lead against Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) via penalty in the opening period of their 184-pound bout. Lineberger scored an escape and a takedown to start the second period. After two nearfalls, Green trailed 8-0 heading into the third. Linebergerscored a takedown and a nearfall in the third to pick up a 14-0 major decision, giving the Falcons a 14-12 lead.
Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside)and Garett Linton went into second victory after a scoreless three periods in a must-win 197-pound bout. In sudden victory, Rosborough scored a quick takedown for the win, cutting the overall score to 16-15 heading into the final bout.
The dual came down to the final heavyweight bout between Noah Hosking (Mildford, Mich./Milford) and Logan Rimmer. After a back-and-forth battle, Hosking scored a takedown for the bout's first points. In the second, Hosking escaped late to bring the lead to 3-0. Neither wrestler scored in the third but it was enough for the Storm to pick up the upset with Hosking's 3-0 decision.
The Storm is back in action this weekend at the Super Region-II Duals hosted by Tiffin University.
