Six Win Individuals Titles, Ball Named Most Valuable as Storm Takes Team Crown at Mt. Union Invitational

ALLIANCE, OHIO – Six individuals earned first place finishes while seven gained either a runner-up or third place as the Lake Erie College wrestling team won the University of Mount Union Invitational on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the MacPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

Ten wrestlers counted in the scoring for the Storm, who totaled 180 points.  The total was 39 more than second-place Mount Union, the event host.  Three future Lake Erie opponents – West Liberty University (129), Seton Hill University (128.5) and Ohio Valley University (47)-  finished in the next three spots.  West Virginia Tech rounded out the team competition in sixth place with 20.5 points.

Sophomore Nate Bal (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) went 4-0 to win the 149-pound weight class and was named the event's Most Valauable Wrestler. He decisioned West Liberty's Nick Wykoff 5-2 in the finals.

The Storm also got individual weight class titles from sophomores Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), freshman Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth), sophomore Jon Schafer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and redshirt sophomore Mikey Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy). 

Ross defeated Alex Poiner of Mount Union 7-1 in the finals at 125 pounds after advancing with a 12-2 major decision in the semifinals.  Gillihan defeated teammate Tom McVicker (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills/Penn Highlands) 7-1 in the finals at 133 pounds.

Like Gillihan, Baughman went 3-0 in winning the 157 pound weight class. Schafer posted that same mark to claim the crown at 184, defeating West Liberty's Derrick Williams 7-6 in the final. 

Samijlenko matched Ball for the winningest day for Lake Erie, going a perfect 4-0 to win the 197-pound weight class.  He took the title with a 15-5 major decision over Mount Union's Lucas Dies.

In addition to McVicker, sophomore Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was second at 174 pounds and freshman Almonte Patrick (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) took second in the heavyweight division in his first action of the season.

The Storm had four third-place finishers.  Freshman Cobey Fehr (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) posted a 3-1 mark to place third at 141 pounds, defeating redshirt sophomore Isaac Morisette (Southgate, Mich./Southgate/Oakland) in the consolation finals.  Sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston)  bounced back from an early loss to win three straight matches convincingly for third place at 165 pounds.  Juniors Tyler Tesney (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) and Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) finished third at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively.

Green matched Samijlenko with four wins overall, finishing with a 4-1 mark.  The Storm had 10 wrestlers win at least three matches on the day.

Lake Erie returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17, when the Storm hosts the Lake Erie Quad I with visiting schools Tiffin University, York College (Pa.) and Waynesburg University at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center beginning at 10 a.m.
