Five attached Lake Erie wrestlers combined for five wins at the Purple Raider Open hosted by the University of Mount Union on Sunday.
The best showing for the Storm came from freshman Tyler Tesny (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls). Tesny won his first two matches to advance to the championship bracket semi-finals and finished sixth at 165-lbs.
Also competing at 165-lbs for Lake Erie was freshman Tyler Leitza (Derry, Pa./Derry) who won his first match his collegiate career in the tournament with a third period pin.
The Green and White had three wrestlers compete at 184-lbs with freshmen Bobby Hager (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) and Michael Vitale (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe). Hager picked up his first career win with a pin just 46 seconds into his opening match and Merritt was a 4-0 winner in his opening consultation bracket bout.
The tournament was held with the blessing of the family and in honor of Mount Union head athletic trainer Dan Gorman. Gorman was tragically killed in a vehicle accident involving the Mount Union bus on its way home from a match at Ohio Northern Tuesday evening.
The Storm is in action next on Friday (Jan. 21) when they travel to Ashland to take on the Eagles in a dual match and will be in Ashland again on Saturday (Jan. 22) for the Simonson Open.
