Junior Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) placed third at 141-lbs and freshman Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) took fourth at 174-lbs to lead eight Lake Erie College wrestlers at the 21-team Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
The eight competitors went 15-16 overall as the Storm finished 15th as a team with 37.5 points. Newbury College won the overall competition with 169 points.
Delpra won one match in the championship bracket before starting a four match run through the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinal, Delpra rolled through #3-seed Tyquan Easton of North-Carolina Pembroke, 11-0 and took the third place match over Northern State's Benton Crow, 12-5.
Linden entered the tournament unseeded and lost in the opening round to #3-seed Josh Whitelock of Newberry, 6-4. In his run of fourth straight wins in the consolation bracket, Linden defeated three ranked opponents, capped off by his consolation semifinal rematch against Whitelock, which he won, 8-4. In the third place match, Linden fell to #6-seed Wade Goblin of Upper Iowa, 8-5.
The other Lake Erie wrestler to finish in the top eight was sophomore 165-lb Andrew Gasber (Madison, Ohio/Madison), who went 2-3 on the weekend. Freshman 133-lb Kevin Brunner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) also picked up a pair of wins and freshmen Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) each picked up one win at 157-lbs, and 184-lbs, respectively.
Lake Erie is in action next on Friday, January 7 when they travel to Pittsburgh-Johnstown for a dual meet.
