PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was in action today as they were victorious over the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals, 20-11.
The Cardinals scored the opening goal, but the Storm tied the game quickly when Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) found the back of the net, to make the score 1-1. The Storm grabbed the lead when Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored off a free position shot, and gave the Storm 2-1 edge. The Cardinals responded with back to back goals to take a 3-2 edge. A. Spin tied the game for the Storm as she scored an unassisted goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in the half. Lake Erie took a 4-3 lead when Riley Heffron (Livermore, Ca. / Granada) scored an unassisted goal. The Storm tacked on a third straight goal when A. Spin scored with just over 18 minutes remaining in the half. After six minutes of scoreless action, Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) scored off a feed from A. Spin. Wheeling Jesuit halted the Storm run with a goal. The Storm responded when C. Spin gave the Storm a 7-4 edge. Crawford scored a second straight Storm goal off an assist from Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado). Lake Erie continued to pull away when C. Spin scored her third goal of the half, and gave the Storm a 9-4 edge with just under four minutes remaining in the half. A. Spin scored the final three goals of the half for Lake Erie and the Storm led 12-4 at the intermission.
The Cardinals opened the second half with back to back goals, to cut the Storm lead to 12-6. C. Spin answered for the Storm as she scored an unassisted goal with just under 25 minutes remaining in the game. The Storm tacked on two more goals as A. Spin and Andersen each found the back of the net. The Cardinals answered back with a pair of goals, and made the score 15-8 with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game. A minute and a half later, Andersen scored for the Storm and gave Lake Erie a 16-8 edge. After a Wheeling Jesuit goal, the Storm put the game away with three consecutive goals, as A. Spin and Brigid Lempko (Buffalo, NY / Mount Mercy Academy) scored for the Storm. Wheeling Jesuit scored two goals late in the game and Crawford scored the final goal for the Storm, as Lake Erie won, 20-11.
The Storm was led by A. Spin as she had eight goals, a pair of assists, and seven draw controls in the game. C. Spin had four goals, six ground balls, and six draw controls in the game. Crawford led the Storm in draw controls with eight and added three goals.
Lake Erie will return to the field Thursday (March 29) when they travel to take on Walsh, with the game set to start at 5 p.m.
