LEBANON, Ill. – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was victorious today (April 10th) over McKendree, 14-10. With the win the Storm improves to 3-6 overall, and 1-2 in the conference, and with the loss the Bearcats fall to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
After McKendree jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Storm answered when Taylor Izzo (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) found Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) with a pass and Mathis scored to tie the game. After back to back goals by the Bearcats the Storm cut the lead to 3-2, when Izzo scored an unassisted goal. McKendree responded with two more goals before the Storm scored, when Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) found the back of the net off of an assist by Mathis. After a Bearcats goal, Izzo scored from a free shot position for the Storm, to make the score 6-4 in favor of McKendree. The storm scored three straight goals to take the lead. The first was scored by Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) and assisted by Izzo, the second goal was scored by Crawford, and assisted by Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy), and the third was scored by Mathis and assisted by Izzo, to make the score 7-6 in favor of Lake Erie. The Bearcats tied the game at 7 goals apiece, and the teams entered the half tied.
Crawford opened the scoring in the second half with her third goal of the game and gave the Storm an 8-7 advantage. With 15 minutes remaining the Storm took a 9-7 lead when Mathis scored an unassisted goal. McKendree answered with a goal to cut the lead to one. Mathis scored her fourth of the game to make the score 10-8 in favor of Lake Erie. The teams trade goals, and Cecilla Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored for the Storm, and gave Lake Erie an 11-9 advantage with 12 minutes to play. McKendree scored and cut the Storm lead to one. Quiggle scored the final three goals of the game, and Lake Erie won the game 14-10.
The Storm was led by Mathis who had four goals, and an assist on the day. Crawford and Quiggle each scored three goals for the Storm. Izzo also scored two goals, and had a game high four assists.
In net for the Storm was Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario / Anderson C.V.I.) she faced 23 shots, 18 of which were on goal, and made eight saves.
Lake Erie will be back in action Sunday (April 12th) at 12 P.M. when they host Ursuline.
