PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (7-9) suffered just its second home defeat of the season, falling to traditional power Mercyhurst University (11-5), 25-12, in a non-conference contest at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
It was the Storm's third loss in a grueling four day stretch, falling to 5-2 in home matches this season.
Sophomore Annie Mendoza (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) posted a seven point game to lead Lake Erie, with four goals and three assists. Sophomore Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) scored three times and freshman Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) added a pair. Junior Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) had a goal and two assists.
Mercyhurst's Jessica Lincoln opened the scoring just 47 seconds in but Lake Erie scored two goals in a 17 second span to take a 2-1 lead when Mendoza found Abu-Kwiek at 26:40. The teams traded goals with Kudla putting the Green and White back on top 3-2 at 23:29 of the first half. The Lakers scored a pair of goals to take the lead but West tied the score at 4-4 at 18:55, off another feed from Mendoza.
For the rest of the first half it was all Mercyhurst as they ended the period on a 9-1 run. The Lakers scored three straight goals before Mendoza briefly stopped their run with a goal at 11:05. Mercyhurst netted the final six goals of the half, including four in the final 4:10, for a 13-5 lead in intermission.
Lake Erie was able to cut the deficit to seven goals early in the second half at 28:13 on a goal by junior Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y/Auburn). Mercyhurst stayed in command but strong when trying to get to a 10-goal lead which would trigger a running clock. The Storm got within seven again at 18-11 with 12:55 to play on a goal by West from Kudla but it was their last goal of the game. The Lakers scored the next seven goals to double their lead to 14 before Lake Erie scored the game's final goal in the final two minutes.
The 25 goals allowed were the most by the Storm this season.
Lake Erie is in action next in its final match of the season as it hosts Queens College Saturday May 5 at 9:00 a.m.
