PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- Visiting Molloy College jumped out to an big early lead and held off a second-half push to hand the Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team a 22-9 East Coast Conference defeat in the Storm's home finale Sunday (May 1) on Senior Day at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
The Lions (9-5, 4-2) got seven goals from six different players in the opening 7:36 before sophomore Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) broke through for Lake Erie's first goal.
After a 3-0 Molloy run increased the lead to 10-1, sophomore Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored the Storm's (2-12, 0-6 ECC) second and third goals but the Lions led 12-3 at halftime behind Emily Antonette's four goals.
Antonette scored twice early in the second half as Molloy extended its lead to a dozen. But freshman Annie Menodoza (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) scored twice and four others, icluding Kudla, found the net during a 6-0 LEC run to cut the lead in half at 15-9 with 15 minutes left.
But that was as close as they would get. Antonette scored on a break-away to end the Storm surge midway through the period. The Lions closed out the final minutes by outscoring the Storm 6-0.
Kudla had three goals and an assist to lead the Storm while Rabuano and Mendoza finished with two each, but it wasn't enough as Lake Erie lost its ninth straight.
Antonette led all players with eight goals and had two assists. Haley Lacey added four goals and Melanie Sosnowski four assists for the Lions, who won their fourth game in a row.
Prior to the game, Lake Erie recognized its lone senior, midfielder Caitlin Malay (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park/Waynesburg). After transfering to Lake Erie from Waynesburg University, Malay has started all 28 games in the program's two-year history.
