PAINESVILLE, OHIO – After spotting host Urbana University a 1-0 lead, the Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team exploded for 10 straight scores and, behind a career-high five goals from freshman Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), went on to a convincing 17-5 nonconference road win on Tuesday afternoon (March 29).
Six Storm (2-3, 0-0 ECC) players scored multiple goals, including three from reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), as Lake Erie improved its goal total for the fifth straight game and won its second in a row.
Tiffany Angelo gave the Blue Knights (0-10) the early lead just 1:08 into the game. But the Storm scored seven times in the next seven minutes, including two goals each by Howe and classmate Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y/Auburn) to take control. After Urbana scored to break the Storm's 10-0 run, sophomore Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored two quick goals to push into double digits at 12-2.
West scored two twice in the final eight minutes of the half as the Storm took a 15-3 lead into halftime.
Sophomore Kim Dang (Atlanta, Ga./Jackson) scored and freshman Stephanie Meister (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin) recorded her first career goal early in the second half to close the Storm's scoring. Tiffany Angelo scored another goal for Urbana with 22 minutes remaining, but neither team netted a score the rest of the way.
Kudla (two goals) and Howe each had three assists and freshman Annie Mendoza (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic), the ECC Rookie of the Week, scored twice and added two helpers for the Storm. Lake Erie outshot the Knights 31-21.
Angelo and Brittany Mazzu each had two goals for Urbana.
The Storm, which has tallied 33 goals in the last two games, hosts Slippery Rock University for its home opener on Tuesday night, April 5, at 7 p.m. at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
